Hellenism in Canada

As in the rest of the countries hosting immigrant Greeks, Hellenism in Canada began to organize itself in the early 20th century, when Greek-Orthodox Communities – Parishes were founded in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and other major cities. This was also the time when national-local associations were established, now surpassing 350. As a rule, these associations cooperate with each other and have created second-level organizations, such as Hellenic-Canadian Congresses of the Provinces, Unions and over 50 Federations, as well as a third-level organization, the National Hellenic-Canadian Congress.  However, it was the Greek Community that developed into the main organizational and representational institution for Greeks in major cities.  These Communities embraced all Greeks regardless of their local origin, religious beliefs or social status and provided them with the assistance they needed during their first steps in a new, unknown environment.

Greeks living in Canada are currently more than 350,000 and are highly dynamic, capable and creative in the cities where they live. They take much pride in their Hellenic culture, religion and customs, as well as in the modern European course of their homeland. Throughout Canada their children learn Greek history, speak the Greek language, dance traditional Greek dances and sing the most popular modern Geek songs. Each year national parades, cultural events and popular Greek Festivals are held in many cities and the 78 Greek-Orthodox churches solemnly celebrate all major religious holidays. Personal and professional progress is undoubtedly achieved by Greek-Canadians in their everyday lives, in the social, political and financial field.

Today, Greek Communities in Canada are distinguished for their successful integration in the greater Canadian society, their professional success and the active role of the second and third generation of immigrants. In Greek Communities, the top of the socioeconomic pyramid is inhabited by a vigorous business class as well as self-employed professionals.  Greeks in Canada have fully adapted to local societies but at the same time continue to preserve their own cultural identity and heritage.
